Draw a line with nowhere to go

A small break from making everything mean something.

A blank page can feel like another assignment. Take the assignment away: for these few minutes, the line does not need to become an object. You can start, stop, and change direction whenever you want.

What you will need
Any pen and a sheet of paper.

Step 01

Start at an ordinary pace

Put your pen somewhere on the page and let it wander. Keep your breathing comfortable and natural. No need to coordinate or count.

Step 02

Try a different movement

Make a curve, a loop, or a short stretch of straight lines. Notice how the pen feels against the paper. If repetition is pleasant, repeat it; if not, change it.

Step 03

Leave a little space

Stop before the page is full. Look at the spaces between the lines as well as the lines themselves. Decide where you want to finish, and put the pen down.

A moment to reflect

Did any movement feel easier than the others? You can carry that observation into tomorrow’s page.

Make it smaller

Trace a slow line with your finger on a blank sheet instead of using a pen.

There is no required feeling at the end. If a prompt feels uncomfortable, pause, change it, or skip it.
